First try at winter sowing

After accidentally coming upon a video for milk jug winter sowing (thank you, algorithms!), I decided I definitely need to get on this asap. I had heard of milk jug winter sowing in Canadian gardener Facebook groups but it sorta washed over me. It didn’t sound like something I’d want to investigate. Using big plastic jugs didn’t accord with my fantasy homesteader project.

So I headed to the grocery store to see if I could some jugs and quickly realized they don’t sell milk in hard plastic jugs in Montreal. Plus we don’t really drink cow milk all that often. Buying a bunch of jugs of water seemed silly to me too, as I’m always harping on about the wastefulness of water on plastic jugs. Ughh. Already stymied!

On a trip to a craft store, I saw a pile of these containers on sale and I was like, bingo!

Drilled a few holes at the bottom of each for drainage:

Removed the handles to provide aeration up top

Filled with wet potting soil. Seeds in.
